As climate change intensifies, the demand for sustainable cooling solutions is becoming increasingly critical across the globe. A new collaborative effort is taking a bold step forward with the creation of a demonstration site in Nigeria, designed to showcase an innovative cooling solution known as PCM-ACStore. This initiative is led by a UK-based PCM Products Ltd. in partnership with a Nigerian engineering manufacturing Rubitec Solar and the University of Nottingham. With a focus on tackling the energy challenges of both nations, this project aims to demonstrate a breakthrough approach to space cooling that could transform how energy is managed and consumed.


What Is PCM-ACStore?



PCM-ACStore is an advanced cooling technology developed to address rising cooling needs while minimizing environmental impacts. It integrates solar PV panels with a supercapacitor and a PV-powered variable-speed DC compressor that uses a natural hydrocarbon refrigerant blend. The system stores cooling energy in PCM (Phase Change Material) ice gel and delivers it when needed, allowing for efficient and flexible energy management. By eliminating the need for inverters and battery storage, PCM-ACStore simplifies the design and reduces costs, making it a more accessible solution for various applications, from residential buildings to commercial spaces.




Why Nigeria?


Nigeria’s rapidly growing population, urbanization, and rising temperatures have led to a surge in cooling demand. However, with an often unreliable power grid, conventional cooling systems struggle to meet the needs of many communities, particularly those in underserved areas. PCM-ACStore offers a promising alternative, providing "cooling on demand" even during frequent power outages. By harnessing solar radiation, the system can operate independently of the grid, ensuring a continuous and reliable cooling solution for Nigerians.

This project also represents an opportunity to strengthen ties between Nigerian and UK industries and academia, fostering collaboration that benefits both nations economically. For the UK, it is a chance to export advanced technology and learn from Nigeria’s rapidly evolving energy landscape, where solutions like PCM-ACStore are crucial for meeting rising energy needs.

While the UK’s current space cooling demand is relatively low—making up just 10% of the nation’s total electricity consumption—there is potential for significant growth. The increase in heatwaves, warmer summers, and higher living standards have already begun to shift expectations around indoor cooling comfort. This project not only showcases a technology with potential in Nigeria but also provides a blueprint for scaling up similar solutions in the UK as demand grows.


How PCM-ACStore Works


The heart of the PCM-ACStore system lies in its innovative design:

  • PV Panels and Supercapacitors: Solar PV panels generate power stored in supercapacitors, ensuring smooth energy supply.

  • Variable-Speed DC Compressor: Driven by solar energy, the compressor adjusts its speed to match cooling needs, maintaining optimal efficiency.

  • Natural Refrigerants: A hydrocarbon refrigerant blend is employed, offering an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional refrigerants.

  • PCM Ice Gel Cooling Storage: The system stores cooling energy in PCM ice gels, releasing it when indoor temperatures rise above desired levels.

  • Radiator Cooling Panels and Transparent Membrane: These components help maximize the cooling effect while minimizing energy loss and eliminating the need for additional humidity control.


The system’s ability to dynamically adapt to varying cooling demands while operating off-grid makes it especially valuable in Nigeria's context, where energy reliability is a constant challenge.
